Thursday, July 19, 2007 - Success!

Tues. night I really wanted to finish up the tablerunner for the shower, but Paul wanted to go out to eat. We ended up going to Piesanno's Picasso. It's this really neat small restaurant that makes specialty pizza. Their special was calzones, so I had one of those instead. It was delicious! Then we went to the crazy store and I did my shopping for the wedding shower. By the time we got home it was 8, but I was determined to get the top done at least. Well when Paul went to bed I had the top done and was just putting on the borders. I got the first one on and it went well, went to add the second border and that didn't go so well. instead of cutting off the ends, I cut the folded side. I knew I was too tired to do any more so I quit. I went to bed and it was 11! I couldn't believe it was so late, no wonder I made a stupid mistake. I finally had some success last night. I made 12 table toppers with the rolled hem on my serger and got those ready for the shower. I had enough fabric to make the last border on the table runner and got that done. Then I went to quilt it. Well I didn't have anything for the back. That's what always gets me. I never have enough for the back. So I used some of the backing for the quilt. Pray that I didn't use too much, but I don't think I did. So I quilted it and put the bind on and was done by 9:30! I am so glad to have that done. I bought the bag for the gift yesterday at the party store, so that is taken care of too. I just have to do a little shopping Sat. morning before I go home to get the sherbet for the punch and the nuts. Tonight is Sew and Sew's. It's a club for all people who go to the Sewing Center. It meets every other month and last for a couple hours. They have a theme of seasons this year. Last year it was the rooms of the home. So tonight is Fall. I'm excited to see what is new and available. Plus they have some really good deals on club night. Mom and I will go out to eat with the other workers and then be back in time. The last hour is usually spent on show and tell. Let me tell you I actually have stuff to bring this time. I have my woven star table runner, irish chain table runner, black and white bags, western table runner, western quilt top, and the signature wall hanging. I feel like I've accomplished so much! Now if I could only get my B/W quilt done for myself I'd be much happier. Oh well I still need to finish the wedding quilt and my dress for the wedding first. I really have to set priorities. It's killing me to have a UFO and not have time to finish it. I have one other UFO that has been that way for 2 years because I can't figure out the curved binding. I think I'm going to end up doing it by hand.
Enough rambling for this morning. Have a sewful day!

Monday, July 16, 2007 - Aren't we cute??

I realized today I've shown pictures of my bro, but I haven't shown any of myself. This is one of Paul and I the night of the Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo in February. This is a huge event in our area. We spent the entire week going to the booths, rodeos, and other events. The pink shirt was for the "Tough Enough to wear Pink" rodeo. My mom had breast cancer, so we both tend to wear pink a lot. This year they had a special rodeo to support cancer research and all the cowboys who wore pink and won got an added purse. We also got a discount if we wore pink. This is becoming a popular rodeo in our state. Even my dad has a couple pink shirts. Paul says he has to be over 40 to wear pink, so I guess he has a while to go. We go to a lot of rodeos as many of my friends and former classmates are on the PRCA circuit, so we like to see them ride. In August we'll go to the Central States Fair and especially the rodeos.

You guys make a very nice couple. We also love rodeos, Richard (my husband) rode bulls for a little while here locally, but I begged him to quit. I love watching it, but not when it's my husband. Just makes me too nervous. Kristie

Monday, July 16, 2007 - Irish Chain table runner block 1

This is the first block of three I am making for their table runner/dresser scarf. It is their wedding shower gift from me and Paul. Since the shower is Sunday, I really have to get busy! I did this tonight with scraps from their quilt. I'm not sure I'm crazy about it,but I think I just need to put the borders on and it will look a lot better.

Monday, July 16, 2007 - Exhausted!

I'm completely exhausted after this weekend. Saturday was Paul's family reunion. I had never met any of these people and he had only met a few of them about 10 years ago. We had a picnic in the park on Sat for lunch and then met at an uncle's apartment for the evening. It was the first time in 10years Paul's mom had seen her dad and he is now remarried and they had been trying to find her, but he only knew her first name as he has had a stroke. So it was really good for them to reunite and get to know each other. Sunday we all met for breakfast and then they came out to our house to watch the car races. It was so much fun! As soon as they left I got busy and did my school work. I hate doing it, because I always leave it till the last minute, but I got it done. Then I worked on the wall hanging for Jim and Addie's shower. I got it all quilted, but I need to put on the binding. I was just too tired last night, so I went to bed.
I got an awesome surprise on Friday night when I picked up the mail. Jen sent me a postcard she had made with a watermelon on it. It is so cool! I had sent her one as well since we both had bad experiences with the last postcard swap we were in. The hostess sent me an email on Friday saying I haven't received your postcard, where is it. I wrote back and said it was sent on Wed. you should receive it by the weekend as the deadline for mailing isn't until Sunday. She wrote back on Sunday and said she received it, but didn't know if it was mine or not. I said well my name is on it as the creator. Guess she didn't read the fine print! She irritates me so much!!! She wants people to make blank ones and send to her so she can send them on to her friends. So I wrote Handmade by Moneik Carol Doak OQG 2007. I take credit for my work! Why would you want to send something that isn't your own work? I think if I'm sending them I want to make them for the people I send them to. I'm getting carried away, but sometimes I'm just a little annoyed with this person.

No, I agree the whole not putting anything on the back so she can send them on further is ridiculous. I made her one just for hosting the swap but I sent a message figuring if I was sending one I wasn't leaving it blank. I too would have put my name as the creator. I'm glad to be done with her. I can't believe after all that she sent another email looking for your post card. Well, I take that back, I CAN believe it because of what type of person she is!! I'm glad you liked my post card. Friday, July 13, 2007 - Woven Star Done!

This is the other side of the table runner. It has all sewing supplies in b/w. I'm really impressed with the binding as it kind of seals it all in. This is a really easy pattern and I had a lot of fun making it. It will go on my cedar chest in the bedroom to match my b/w quilt.

Friday, July 13, 2007 - Woven Star Done!

I finished my woven star table runner last night! The class was so much fun and we laughed and joked the whole time. It amazes me that I am 20 years younger than all the other ladies, yet we all still find a lot to talk about. I devistated two ladies when I told them the Willie Nelson concert next week was postponed to Sept. I had read it online before class, but they hadn't heard the news. This is the back side of the tablerunner. The border is b/w sewing machines. It's a reversible table runner.

Thursday, July 12, 2007 - Sit and Sew Success

Last night was great. I feel like I accomplished so much! I was at the store by 5:30 and got my stuff set up and right to work. I sewed all the blocks into rows for the western quilt. Mind you this is all done in diagonal strips and the pattern doesn't tell you how to lay it out, so I spent the good part of the time laying it out on the floor, going back and forth picking up pieces and sewing. I only had to take out one seam, but that was because I had to move and got the wrong pieces sewn together. I got the whole quilt except for the one middle seam to sew the two halfs together done. I am so excited and it turned out really well! Today I have to finish the weaving because we have class tonight for that. The crazy lady didn't show up, but the one's who were there were a lot of fun. There was another software class going on in the store and when they got done, one lady stayed to visit. She was super annoying so I just ignored her. She thinks is so much fun to live in a 24 ft. trailer in the mountains with no running water, sewer, anything for years at a time. Her and her husband have been in the mountains of WY for the last 3 years. She was telling of her run in with a moose and how she doesn't shower, just spit bathes for weeks at a time. I could not do that! I don't last a day without a shower. Guess each to their own, but that is not how I am spending my retirement! Give me a huge 5th wheel, electricity, and my sewing machines and I'll be happy or better yet let me stay home and take classes. I have 40+ years to think about it. Guess I'll keep dreaming!

LOL.....I wouldn't mind living in the mountains in a trailer for a while, BUT I would need water, a sewer and electricity!!! I can rough it only to a point, ya know?

I need a bathroom and shower, and I really don't want to heat water every time I want to wash dishes. I think there is merit to the simple life. mine is pretty simple. But doing without all the conveniences is just nuts to me! Maybe the moose was attracted to her smell! Rhoda

My parents have a house in the boondocks of Colorado (up in the mountains) and we do have an outhouse out back but we have running water and electricity. We only used the out house when they first bought the place because my dad wasn't sure that they people that had it before us had taken care of the sewage tank (or what ever its called). Wednesday, July 11, 2007 - No Sewing for me

I am kind of bummed that I didn't get much done last night. Paul wanted to go out to eat with his mom, so we went to Colonial House. Don't get me wrong, the food is great, but I don't get anything done when we go out. Then we went to DQ for ice cream. The new Sonic is still way to crazy to even attempt. Then we went to the crazy store because I needed printer ink. I so totally forgot it was EBT day and the lines were a mile long! Luckily the store manager checked us out really fast at a closed drawer. So we were home about 8:30, but I needed to finish addressing my postcards and print the invites for the shower. Well my printer didn't want to cooperate, I couldn't get mail merge to work, and I was tired. By 11 I finally had them printed, but I needed to pack my sewing stuff for Sit and Sew tonight, so no sewing for me. I really wanted to have the wedding quilt pieced, but guess I'll be doing that tonight. I went to the PO at lunch. The guy didn't want me to send my postcards because they wouldn't go through the machine. I said I've sent over 20 and received that many and none have had troubles. Well I'm warning you that they probably won't go. I said well I'll take them to my local postmaster if you don't want to send them. He said they'll still have to go through a machine. I said no they won't, she'll hand cancel them. He argued with me for a while, checked with his supervisor and finally mailed them. Guess I won't be going back to the mail PO any time soon! I was so irrate that it took me my entire lunch hour to get these mailed. Plus I'm swamped at work and haven't had a chance to breath yet since I've trained 3 groups today! I think I need a long break!

There is one guy in our local post office who must be related to your person! I would not DARE take a fabric post card to him to mail. The other main guy would bend over backwards for you, but of course when you are waiting in line you can't just wait for the one you want. Cathy K (in our Carol D group) mentioned clear envelopes that she usually mails hers in - do you know what she is talking about?? Glad to see you got your postcards mailed before the postcard police come after you ;>) I wouldn't call then clear envelopes, but rather clear baggies. I got some at Hobby Lobby in the Jewelry section that are 4X6 and have a seal at the small end. She sent mine in one with the stamps on the outside. I don''t mind a little postal mark on the ones I've received. They all look really good. I was worried about the postcard police or I would have given them to my mom and she could have gone to the local postmaster (my godmother) and she would have hand cancelled them. There is no machine there. They are all done by hand. But they wouldn't have gone out until Monday and oh no a day late would have ruined my swap partners lives. Saturday, August 11, 2007 - Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

We made it to Sturgis last night to see the bikes and the people. I took a couple pictures on my camera phone before it got too dark. We usually go up and walk up and down main street and Lazelle street, the two main streets through Sturgis. Main is only for the bikes so this is where I took pictures. There are tons of shops for 10 blocks up and back. It was pretty calm this year, but Daughtry was playing out at the Buffalo Chip Campground, which is like 5 miles out of town, so a lot of people were there. You will see a few kids in the bottom picture. These are locals. Very few bikers bring their kids, it's not the place for them to be. The locals (like us) will go out for the evening and just look around and see what is going on. It's okay to take kids to this type of activity because for the most part everyone is covered. I think we only saw 2 that had pasties on. Most of the ones that are scantily clad just want the attention. The rally is over on Sun. so our little area will go back to being quiet and slow. We're off to do errands today, so I better get moving.

We have the same kind of events in Port Dover Ontario Fiday the 13th.No one wears skimpy clothing but its funny you have the motor cycle gangs right along side of the christen riders every one gets along beautifully .They provide a lot of police control but I have never heard of any problems .Most riders are very respectful.At least from what I can see as a outsider .

I made this table runner in a class a couple weeks ago. It's a really easy pattern and I enjoyed making it. There were two beginners in the class with me. I don't know if they ever finished, but it took me quite a while to get it done since I kept working on other things.

Monday, July 9, 2007 - Postcards

These are the postcards I made for the postcard swap I am in. I had fun making the ones on the bottom, but my rwb heart didn't turn out so well. The b/w hearts are my favorites because they use scraps from my quilt. I enjoy making these, but it always takes time away from my other big projects.
I put the smaller picture in the next post. That way they are smaller. Yes Jen I had the same problem. I figured it wasn't getting any better so I quit. It's a wavy heart!

Monday, July 9, 2007 - Busy Weekend!

I had a busy sewing weekend! Friday night Paul was tired so I went with my mom to the fabric store. We had a great time picking out the fabric I needed for my brother's wedding quilt. I had an idea of the fabric I wanted to use, but hadn't picked out what I wanted to match. Finally this weekend all the fabric was 25% off, so I went for it! I picked out a blue with boots, an off white with hats, and a baby blue and red to go with them. After having supper and going to the crazy store aka Walmart, I finally made it home at 11:30! Sat. morning Paul had to work, so I slept in, okay 9:00, but that's sleeping in to me. Then I did a couple errands and it was way too hot to be out, so I came home and made the humbug bag, then I made 8 postcards for a swap I am in. I got them all done and went to address them and realized two people wanted specifics, so I went back to the computer, printed the new foundations and picked out fabric. By that time the fabric for my bro's quilt was done and I was bored with postcards, so cut out and made the nine patches. The patterns not quite accurate, so it's a good think I bought some extra fabric. I sewed all those together Sat. night. Sunday I made a quick trip to the crazy store and then I made myself do my school work. I have a BA degree, but the school I work at offers business courses online at a reduced rate for employees, so I'm taking classes just to learn and for the fun of it. I still have to pass or they don't pay, so I have to be good about doing the work. All my assignments for the week are due Sunday at midnight, so I knew I needed to get busy. This quarter I'm taking Prin. of Marketing, so it's pretty interesting. Anyway I did my homework for two lessons for the week which took me 3 hours. By 2 I was working on the Churn Dash blocks for the western quilt. They turned out pretty good an by 7 I had them all done, so I put them up on my design wall and took a picture. Hope you like the others I took. They were all on my home computer, so I uploaded them last night while I was checking my school work. I really am in a black and white and pink phase right now, but I think it's a cool combo. My black and white quilt is the same combo, but it is taking a back seat while I make this quilt for my bro. Friday I also got the blocks back from a Fat 8th exchange I did on the Carol Doak site. They are really cool and will make a nice wall quilt, but I need to do the wedding stuff first. I worked on the invitations for the shower last night too. I have them all written out, now they need to be addressed. I am making a table runner for their wedding shower gift and a wall quilt with their picture for the guest book, so it should be interesting. So much to do, so little time. I also need to make another Humbug bag for the store as a sample. They are really fast, but I need to get more grosgrain ribbon. I only have pink and I want to do one that needs black ribbon. I think I'll finish up the postcards since they are quick, then make the bag and then maybe I'll get to piecing the wedding quilt top. It's going to be a short week.

Monday, July 9, 2007 - Tote Bag

This tote bag (could be a purse) was made using scraps and a pattern in the Happy Hour book from Atkinson designs. I fell in love with the tote bag at the quilt show and had to have the book. It was super simple to make and makes a great lunch bag for work or could be a great purse when I wash my other one.

Monday, July 9, 2007 - My Purse

I designed this purse using the same techniques as the Low Slung bag, but made it a purse size since I couldn't find one I liked in the store. I absolutely love it and it's the perfect size! The outside pockets are perfect for my cell phone and keys, so I can always reach them quickly. This is made with b/w scraps from the quilt too.

Very fun purse! I really like that you used the feather stitch. I usually just use the triple straight stitch on purses to that they look more professional than just a single straight stitch. But this, I really really like the looks of.

Monday, July 9, 2007 - Western Quilt

I finally picked out the fabric for my brothers wedding quilt. I got all the blocks made this weekend and I will sew them together tonight. I just ran out of time this weekend, but I did get 32 blocks made, so I'm pleased with my efforts. This is also a Kay Capps Cross pattern called Goddess of Light. Really simple to make and I think they will love the fabrics. There bedroom color is blue.

This is the bag I made this summer after a class with Kay Capps Cross. She works almost exclusively in black and white, so I used my scraps from the b/w quilt to make this bag. The pattern is called low slung I can live with. Great for taking stuff to quilting class.

Monday, July 9, 2007 - Woven Stars - In progress

I uploaded a bunch of pictures at home this weekend so I could show what I've been working on. This is the woven star table runner I'm taking the class on Thurs. nights for. It's kind of hard to see, but once I get the black and white borders on and finish the weaving I think it will be really cool. It will be reversible, so I will have two different borders and a binding which matches both. This is the pattern I've been blogging about the past few days.

Friday, July 6, 2007 - Missed a point

I missed the point of explaining how the weaving all comes together. After you weave all the tubes together, you pin to itself and you flip it over to make sure you don't have mistakes on the other side. This is the tricky part because it all has to be pinned to itself. When you are weaving it is all pinned to the cardboard loom. I used flower pins stuck up straight as they were easiest to see. You pin each end of the strips and then in the middle. While weaving you have to constantly move the pins out of your way and then put them back to hold it in place. My mom made the looms from cardboard boxes and drew the lines - a straight line and then 60 degree angles so we could get the angle right. When it is all weaved correctly, I will use my sewing machine and baste a line along the outside edges and across the top and bottom. Then I will take out all the pins and check for any mistakes. Then the borders are sewn on and it is checked again to make sure there aren't any mistakes (there usually are) and changes are made before finally sewing with a regular stitch to put the borders on. They are put on both sides with different colors and then fusible batting is put on the inside of the borders. This is reversible with really no "quilting" to do, so it will come together quickly when I get the weaving done. The weaving is not sewn together at all in the center. That is all loose, so you can stick your fingers through it. The only place it is held together is along the edges, that's why it's important to get the weaving correct and close.

Friday, July 6, 2007 - Tubes Again!

Well I think I wrote way too fast yesterday. I didn't proofread and I can see I made a lot of mistakes after re-reading. Guess I need to not do it the last 10 min. of work.
The tubes I made are of 3" strips of fabric by the with of the fabric. These are sewn together in long tubes. Then the seam is pressed open with a little mini clover iron with a dowl stuck through the tube. Using tube turners, all the tubes were turned inside out and then the seam is pressed to the side flat. I had to try to get the seam perfect so you couldn't see more fabric on one side than the other. When I had 6 or 8 done, I put them all flat on my ironing board and starched them on both sides. Using Best Press works the best. It is a lavendar scented spray starch that the sewing center started carrying. I think it's called Mary Ellen's Best Press and it comes in a plastic spray bottle. After all the tubes were prepared I was ready for the class. Last night I met mom for supper and then we went to class. She's an awesome teacher and there were two new gals there, so we had lots to visit about. http://dreamweaverpatterns.com/ The pattern we were doing last night is the woven stars at the top. You first lay down 10 tubes in the order the pattern indicates, on a cardboard loom. Then using the 60 degree angle on the loom, you weave the other tubes through using her directions, from top to botton and then after finishing the first set of weaving, you weave the other direction. This is the most challenging part because they only fit a certain way and if you do the first set wrong you have to start all over again! I spent the whole 3 hours working on my weaving and I did pretty well since I had done it before, but I only got about half of the second set of weaving done. So I took my huge loom with all the pins in it home to work on. We are to have the weaving done and have the edges sewn together so we can put the borders and binding on in the next class on Thurs. night. It's one of those projects you have to get up an walk away sometimes. You can become really cross eyed looking at it. I made the tumbling blocks and that is the one that went to quilt market, thus the reason I now have the woven stars pattern. I love this technique! Next we are doing the octagonal table topper and I'm going to tell mom about the bag because she doesn't have that pattern - yet!!! I'll take a picture when I get it pieced, because there are so many pins in it right now I don't think you could see what I'm doing.

Monday, July 2, 2007 - Weekend

I'm not nearly as lucky as some people to get most of the week off, but I do get Wed. & Thurs. off. Friday I took off at 4 and Paul and I packed and went to my parents ranch. They live about 120 miles east of us. We stayed over night with them and then rode with them and my younger brother to Mitchell Sat. morning. Along the way we got to stop at Chamberlain which is a little town on the interstate. Once you go to the far north side of main there is an old farm house that was moved onto a lot and renovated. The main level is several rooms of quilt materials. There's a kitchen and coffee is always on. The quilt shop was really awesome and I found the perfect black fabric for the borders of my black and white quilt. In the basement it is all set up for quilt retreats. A sewing room, a bedroom, a cutting/ironing room, bathroom. And there are more bedrooms upstairs too. It's a Bed and Breakfast in a quilt shop. It also has a cool porch out front. Needless to say I spent quite a bit there, but I had a really good time and we only spent 15 min. as the guys were in the car.
Then we went on to Mitchell and had a family picnic. One of my great aunts lives in Mitchell and the other in MN, so we each had to drive about 4 hours to get there. Our part of the family lives west river. We had a good time and had a mini quilt show of my mom and my quilts. My one aunt is a quilter and she was in love with them which is a great feeling since I have always admired her work. Then we dropped the guys off at Cabela's and we went to the quilt shop and fabric store. I thought the quilt shop closed at 4 and we were going to miss it, but it was open until 5:30, so we go to stop. I picked up some more b/w fabric and a journal cover pattern. Boy did we have fun! We picked up the guys and went back to Mom and Dad's. We were home by 9:30pm, so a long day after getting up at 4:30am. Sunday we splept in and then Paul and I drove home. His mom and her boyfriend wanted us to do errands with them, so we did, but boy was I tired. Then I had to do my school work and that took forever! I love taking classes, but it's a lot of work. We are going to the ranch on Wed. as the community my parents live in puts on a pit BBQ of a steer each 4th. This is the 100th anniversary of Milesville, the town I grew up in, so I want to go and be part of the celebration. The food is all potluck and then free will goes to the volunteer fire dept. It's always such a great time, but this will be Paul's first year there, so we'll see how much he enjoys it. He should have a great time, but he won't know a whole lot of people there. Guess I better eat lunch.

Tuesday, June 26, 2007 - Accomplished!

I finally accomplished something. I was able to get all the blocks sewn together on my black and white quilt at Sit and Sew on Friday night. I even picked out the border fabrics which look really cool with the quilt top. I got an expert opinion on what colors to use, which were different than what I was planning, but oh well they will look great. I also was able to get my dress top altered to have a different neckline. I'm going to cut it out tomorrow night at Sit and Sew. This weekend I worked at TSC which is a local sewing store. I help out a few Sat. a month, so it is a way to see what is new and to get some experience. I always find it interesting to see what other people want to sew. Sunday I cut out the binding for a tablerunner I want to finish. It was storming, so I couldn't sew, but at least I got it cut out and the binding is ready to go on it if I ever stay home long enough. Last night my boyfriend and I went to the World of Outlaws races. They were held at the local speedway and it was awesome, minus when they had to pick the rocks off the Speedway. We didn't get home until 2AM, so I am completely exhausted, but oh well, they only come once a year if that. Usually we have to travel 10+ hours to Fargo, ND to get to see them. I was hoping to get to sew tonight, but my boyfriends mom needs my help dress shopping. She has no daughters, so she relies on me to help her pick out appropriate clothing. She was wearing a size 18 when I met her, even though she was really a size 14. Now she is down to a size 8 and hasn't bought a dress since she was an 18! Her boyfriend's son is getting married in 2 weeks and he wants her to be his date to the wedding, so she needs a nice dress to wear. I love helping her pick clothes out as she just needs some direction. She now wears clothes that fit after 2 years of working with her and she is beautiful. If I could pick a career in my new life, I would be a fashion consultant to normal women who need to look nice, without expensive clothes or looking like they were teeny boppers. If I could make money doing it, I would, but there just isn't the call for it here. I use Paul's mom and my mom as practice. Maybe I should be a fashion designer too, since everything is so trendy and outrageous looking. I used to design a lot of my clothes when I was younger and in 4-H and doing modeling, but I haven't as an adult. The dress for my brothers wedding will be the first dress I have made in 3 years I think. At least this time I have a serger to use. That was my splurg last year and I can't believe I have lived without it.

Thursday, June 21, 2007 - Back in the Swing

I think I'm finally getting back in the swing of things, for this week at least. We are experiencing 90+ degrees days, so when I get home I am just beat. Since I finished up the Fat 8 Swap for one of my online groups on Monday night, I decided maybe I should start working on the postcards for the other swap I am in. I have 6 to make and usually I just whip them out in an evening. They aren't due until July 15th, so I am really getting a jump on things. I printed out all the foundations I would need, pulled the fabric I would need, and got ready to sew. The problem was the focus fabric I planned to use for the postcards is also the binding for a table runner I have yet to finish. I took the class last month and it's been basted ready to be quilted, but I just haven't done it. So I put the postcards to the side and quilted the table runner last night instead. I just have to square it up and put the binding on. That will be a project for another night. I think tonight I will convince my mom to go fabric shopping with me. She works today and her class for tonight was cancelled, so we could go to all the fabric stores. I mean really I have plenty of time to make the postcards, it's not even July 1 yet. Paul says we are putting the hardwood flooring in this weekend, so I won't get any time to sew. Oh well the house will look awesome when it is done.

I am such a procrastinator, sometimes I leave it until the end just because I can. I haven't been late on a deadline yet. Wednesday, June 20, 2007 - A little sewing and lot of home improvement!

Since I last wrote it seems like I am finally starting to accomplish a lot. I finished the rag quilt for my boyfriend and he loves it. I also made myself a tablerunner for the office that has sewing related fabric on it. At work we moved offices during May, so it has been a whirlwind of activity and trying to stay caught up has been a nightmare. Summer quarter finally started, so at least I kind of have a lull until we start Fall students. I am still working on Black White quilt from back in March. I decided to make it queen size instead of lap size, so I keep adding to it. The pieces are finally finished and together as a top, but I need to add the borders. In the mean time I used the scraps to make a purse, a tote, and a big bag. They are all way cute. Since the beginning of May my boyfriend has been putting in new flooring at the house, so I've been his assistant. We put granite tile in the kitchen and I've decided tile floors are like quilting because you can put patterns in them as well. Then we on a whim put laminate flooring in the basement. I love it because this is where my sewing room is, so I can speed from one end of my sewing room to the other. I had carpet before and that was a challenge just to move my chair. This weekend we are putting hardwood floor in the living room. This will make the house complete as we are leaving the carpet in the bedrooms. It will be so nice to have it all done and then I can get back to quilting. I've been sticking to my one class a month pretty well, although I haven't gone in June yet, so I'm getting in a rut. I did go to the quilt show and bought some new fabric and patterns, so I'm getting in the mood again. Hope everyone is having a sewful day!

Life is Passing By Take What Comes and Make the Best of IT!

Well in the past year there have been a tremendous amount of changes in my life. The last time I wrote my grandma had just passed away. In the year which followed my parents moved to Milesville, I took a new job as a prior learning evaluator, my grandpa passed away, and my other grandma passed away. It was a very stressful year, but things are starting to look up. I love where my parents are at. It's so nice to go "home to the country". My brother Jim met and is marrying a girl named Adele. Ed graduated and works for Butler Cat. Paul and I are still together and I'm sewing up a storm. I have a new sewing machine and serger and I love to quilt and create whenever I have a minute. I'm not letting life pass me by. That's my new philosophy. Take what comes and make the best of it.

Thursday, May 11, 2006 - Quilting and Life

As much as I think I can get done it just doesn't seem to happen. Grandpa's been in the hospital for a little over a week and at times critical, so I've been spending lots of time there. Needless to say I haven't gotten any sewing done. I have three quilt tops finished, but I just haven't done any more. Now that I have the plan I need to figure out when I'm going to get them done. My friends are getting married this weekend and I've been trying to get there quilted wall hanging done, but I keep making mistakes and it's only two days away. Guess I will have to make some time tonight.

I am so sorry to hear of your Grandfather's illness! I hope he gets better quickly! Sounds like you've been busy too - what patterns did you do on your 3 tops?! Do you have any pictures yet?!! I love pictures!! LOL! I hope you get your wall hanging done too, just slow down a bit, take a deep breath and take it easy! It'll happen! Good luck! Michelle

Wednesday, April 11, 2007 - A New Day!

Well this blog has sadly been neglected for the past several months. A lot of things have been going on that have kept me from doing as much sewing and I would like to be doing. I finished all my Christmas presents and they went over really well. I was pleased with how much everyone liked their gifts. In January I kind of hit a lull in my quilting. I just didn't know what I wanted to start. I made a New Years resolution to only take one quilting class a month. Although this has really been good for my relationship with my boyfriend, I kind of miss classes. I was going to at least 2 nights of class a week. This was a big change. In January I took an embroidery class for my mom to help her learn her new machine. We had a lot of fun playing with this machine. The last week of Jan. was Stock Show week which is a big deal for me. We usually go to rodeos both weekends and are at the show almost everyday. This kept me going nonstop for a week. Mom and I traded sewing machines for 3 weeks so I could take some embroidery classes. I learned a lot, but not having my machine was hard on me. Her's is just different. When I got my machine back, it needed to go to the shop where it spent 2 weeks getting cleaned and fixed. Talk about a long 2 weeks!!!! Then I was on vacation and spent a week at home with mom. We did a lot of embroidery and I worked on a sweatshirt jacket, but I didn't get as much done as I would have liked. I also went to a quilt retreat with her and a sewing slumber party. I finished up my sweatshirt jacket too! For National Quilting Day, I went to a class by Kay Capps Cross. She does a lot of design work in black and white with a zinger (one bright color). This was really stepping outside my box as I am pretty traditional. I learned a lot and almost have all the blocks done for this quilt. I had bought some fabric for a denim rag quilt for my boyfriend several months ago. I decided about March 21, that I could get it done by his birthday on the 30th. I had to work on it when he wasn't around or was asleep, so I spent many late nights working on it. We just tried to do too much and I didn't quite get it done. I have all the blocks sewn in rows, I just need to connect them together now. He got other things, so doesn't even know he is getting this quilt. The first week in April I took a quilt class on paper piecing a tablerunner. I wanted to make it for my boyfriends mom's birthday which is today. I worked really hard both nights of class and all day Friday to get it done. I had to quilt it Monday night and bind it last night, but I got it done and she loves it. Now back to the rag quilt. I think I've finally gotten out of my slump. I'm working on a lighthouse wallhanging for a coworker too, so need to get that finished before the end of the month. So much sewing to do, Sew little time!

Wow, 2 classes a week? You must have lots of UFO's to finish! They all sound like a lot of fun though. The denim quilt, will you have to sit and rag the edges after it's complete or is it not that type of pattern? I was really busy taking classes, most were tablerunners I finished in class. Sometimes I was going to sit and sew one night a week too, so I finished some there. I have have 3 UFO's which need to be finished. I usually have to finish something before I can do something new. I have the fabric for a new bag, but have to finish four projects before I can start it. I need to do a lot of sewing! Yes I will have to snip the edges, but I can do that at work during my lunch hour. I'm always looking for ways to sew at work without my machine. I do a lot of Hardanger for this reason. Pictures! We need pictures! It sounds like you've actual done quite a lot in the last few months; it probably just doesn't seem like much since you appear to be used to a much busier sewing schedule. I sometimes struggle with spending time with my quilting or spending time with my husband. Last night I forced myself to put my quilt down and go snuggle with my husband, and I'm so glad I did. It is important not to take our relationships for granted. I love snuggling up with a cozy quilt, but nothing beats snuggling up with someone you love!Edited by Vesuviusmama on Thursday, April 12, 2007 at 08:41 AM

Monday, November 20, 2006 - No time to write!

Wow, It seems like this month has just flown by and I haven't had a spare minute to write. The quarter ends today so I should have time for a week or so until everyone gets started on interim term.
I have been super busy in the past few weeks. My new baby 6600 is getting quite the workout. I've been working on paper pieced barns like crazy and have completed wall hangings for my uncle, 2 cousins, and my dad. I also completed coasters for my co-workers. I'm working on a quilt and wall hanging for my mom and a wall hanging for my brothers girlfriend. I have the quilting just about done on her quilt. Luckily I'm learning to free motion and she won't care if there are some mistakes since she quilts too. With any luck I can get my laundry list of Christmas presents done this year.

Tuesday, November 7, 2006 - Exhausted!

Wow I can't believe it has been almost a month since I last wrote. Well I guess since my boss had her baby I haven't written since I am so swamped with work. I don't have a free minute during the day now. I am so exhausted from working this hard, but maybe it will slow down now that the application campaign is over.
I have been working on raggy quilts for Christmas presents. I have 3 done and 1 left to go. Don't know what else I will make, but for now that is pretty good. I did get a winter wall hanging and 2 barn wall hangings done. I also finished up my trees for the row by row quilt I am working on. I bought a new 6600 and I absolutely love sewing and quilting on it. I'm not very good at free motion yet, but that will come. I have been quilting so much I think I'm going to wilt. I love, love, love my new machine! On to another row of house this time for the row by row quilt, and another barn for my dad. I'm going to be busy before Christmas.
