AMB Tour - Welcome to South Dakota!

web_photo_for-zoey-11

The American Made Brand blog tour by Clothworks is well underway and I am excited to bring South Dakota to the center stage today. Welcome to the beautiful state of South Dakota.

When I began designing the license plate block I asked several other quilting friends what they would include. Each and every one said Mt. Rushmore. So I went to work, playing with the design until I thought it truly represented the most famous faces in South Dakota. I used red, white, and blue as they are the colors represented on our license plate. The lettering across the top includes the state name and our year of state hood. We're celebrating 125 years as a state this year!
Quilt 2014-06-09 010
We are experiencing a very cool wet spring after a terrible October blizzard caused monumental damage across western SD. It seems we may never get warm weather, but the trees and grass are greening up.
Quilt 2014-06-09 008
The famous faces are appliqued on in a raw edge applique. I used 40 wt. Red and Blue Aurifil thread for the applique.

South Dakota is most famous for the four presidents faces on Mt. Rushmore, located in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. I feel fortunate that I was able to work there for six summers while I was in college and teaching. It's a very moving place to visit. While many tourists plan their visit to SD for the mountain, there are many other area attractions. Visit www.travelsd.com for more information about many of the destinations I mention below.

Crazy Horse is a life size mountain carving, still in progress, celebrating the Native American people. It is located a short drive from Mt. Rushmore.
Spearfish Canyon provides a unique look at the Black Hills. Roughlock Falls and Bridal Veil Falls are two of the scenic places to pull over, take a walk and explore the beauty up close. This is a picture I took on Saturday when we visited. We camp at nearby Roubaix Lake and get out to enjoy the scenic beauty with the kids. It's a great place to let the kids run.
Camping 2014-06-07 081

While visiting the Black Hills during the late spring, summer, and early fall are all amazing, there is one week to avoid... unless you love motorcycles! The annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally takes part the first couple weeks of August each year and a half million people descend on the state for this event. It's so much fun to see all the bikes and learn about the bikers who visit, but motel rooms and campgrounds are full as are the restaurants and every road. It's held for one week, but the bikers arrive early and stay later, so it usually ends up being the first half of August.

We are home to several National Parks, including Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, and the Badlands. At the entrance to the Badlands is the small town of Wall, home to Wall Drug. Have you seen a sign?? The Wall Drug signs are everywhere, including foreign countries. Such a cool stop and a way to relax after the long drive. In SD we do not measure in minutes, but rather in miles. If it's a 30 mile trip, it will take about 30 min.

South Dakota also boosts a lot of farming and ranching. I grew up in the country, attended a country school with 8 students, K-8 grade, in Milesville. If you can find it on the map, you're doing really well! It's about 80 miles west of the state capitol of Pierre, which is directly in the center of the state. We also have a lot of good fishing in the lakes, rivers, and streams.

Custer State Park in the Southern Hills is famous for the Bison herds. Each fall the annual bison round up brings thousands of people to the Hills to experience this unique event. With several lakes to choose from, there is good fishing, hiking - including to the top of our highest point Harney Peak, and camping.

South Dakota is divided almost evenly down the center of the state by the Missouri River. This creates the eastern and western parts of the state. East River includes our largest city - Sioux Falls. Below is a picture of Falls Park, one of the most incredible places to visit. Also on the eastern side of the state are the Mitchell Corn Palace - a one of a kind attraction, completely covered in corn. The Laura Ingalls Wilder homestead is located near DeSmet, SD and includes a pageant and tours of the home. Such a fun way to experience history.

Another favorite part of South Dakota is South Dakota State University in Brookings. On the eastern edge of South Dakota, SDSU is the home of the Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band. As an SDSU alumni, one of my favorite memories of college was playing at a Green Bay Packers game and at the Bicentennial Parade in Washington DC on the 4th of July.
SDSU is also home to the Campanile. It's tall structure is seen for miles across the prairie of SD. While it has many nicknames, the Campanile is well known as a landmark on the SDSU campus. SDSU is the land grant university of SD.

Thanks for stopping by to visit SD on the AMB blog tour. Today I am sharing the tour with Terry Stegmiller of North Dakota, our neighbor to the north. Please visit the other bloggers on the tour and enjoy the scenery.
They very generous folks at Clothworks are giving away a fat quarter bundle of the AMB fabrics. To enter the giveaway, please tell me what you found most intriguing about the SD places I described or a favorite memory of SD. I will keep the giveaway open through Tuesday and then select a winner. This giveaway is only available domestically.
I'd love to have you follow me as I regularly blog about my prolific sewing, quilting, and teaching as well as sewing with my 3 1/2 year old daughter. I look forward to reading your comments and making new blog friends! If you're planning a visit to this great state, I'd love to share more details about anything of interest to you. I'd be happy to be your partner in crime for finding a few great quilt shops to visit as well!

I've been waiting for this post! I'm originally from South Dakota. I was born in Aberdeen, lived for a year during second grade in Rapid City, and then moved to Britton in sixth grade and resided there until I graduated. I'm also a SDSU alumnus!! It was there that I met my husband who was in Army ROTC, so we now live an Army life. I really like your license plate block--its a great way to use the great solids. I'm glad that you showed other great places in the state, though. I like to say South Dakota: So much more than Mt. Rushmore!

You did a beautiful job on the block, Moneik!! Simply striking! As for the attractions... I'd normally say SDSU, Spearfish Canyon, or Laura's homestead, but I guess I should say the corn palace since that's where we bought a house!! We close in July!!

I have not been to South Dakota, but I have heard it is beautiful. What intrigues me is Mt Rushmore. It is hard enough to draw a picture of someone with pencil and paper (and if you make a mistake, you can erase and redraw) but to do it in stone, there is no eraser! And you are dangling from a rope, basically!!

Love your plate. Yes, we've been to SD. The fondest memory is getting stuck in our little Grand Am Pontiac in a herd of buffalo in the Custer preserve. They were so gentle, quiet and not smelly. They walked around the car and kept on doing their thing. One scratching on a rock moved it out of the dirt as it worked out an itch. Thanks for the reminder of that event.

Our family has enjoyed many trips to South Dakota. One time we camped out and the town was full of Sturgis Bikers. Our kiddos where then 7 and 4. Those bikers where the kindest and most fun people. Years later my sister gets a boyfriend and when we tell this story turns out he was one of those bikers in that town at that same time. So funny. Don't know if we ever met him or not. He is a big tall biker teddy bear. We stopped at a McDonalds for lunch then and across the street was an air base. Two pilots came in and I was able to get pictures with them and my son together. They gave him a signed pencil drawing of one of their planes. He has always been highly intersted in planes. He still has that print on his wall. He is 29.

My most moving moment in S.Dakota was seeing Mt. Rushmore at the night ceremony. The way they slowly light it up...... I have taken the scenic drive through Badlands, driven the needles hwy, visited Crazy Horse, and of course went to Wall Drug! The actual story behind that is quite interesting, with the wives coming up with the idea of free water! I also enjoyed the small museum in Keystone, the name is escaping me, learned all about the sculpter of Mt. Rushmore. Your plate is beautiful, did you use a photo and trace positive and negative space?

I have been to South Dakota. I went to Custer's, Mt. Rushmore and to Crazy Horse Monument. They were all awesome! Such a beautiful state. Your block is very good!

Beautiful block! I haven't been to the Black Hills since I was about 10 and now every spring we talk about going and never do. Need to change that! My dad grew up in Huron so we spent a fair amount of time there too.

We love South Dakota! Have never been to Mt Rushmore, but always a treat to anticipate, and then stop, at Wall Drug!!!

I most remember looking up at several buffalo as we were travelling through South Dakota in a very small car.

I grew up in MN, but only went to SD once to visit Rushmore. I have vague memories of it since it was almost 30 years ago. We camped and I think we saw some buffalo on a farm.

I'm from Tennessee! Yes, I know there is more to SD than Mt. Rushmore, but the hubs and I still very much want to see it and RV in the area.

I've never been to South Dakota. I have a friend who grew up there, and loved it minus the motorcycles! As an ICU nurse at a trauma center, I don't mind the fact that it gave him a not-so-good impression of motorcycles!

I have visited many of the sites you mention, and the most intriguing to me is Crazy Horse, because of the multi-generational dedication to creating it, the skill required to carve through blasting, and its sheer size. I hope to see it again one day.

Moneik, Nice job! South Dakota is one of the few states I have not been to. Everyone I know who has been there says it is not to be missed. And they all say Mt. Rushmore is amazing. Now I am amazed you captured that in your license plate design - LOVE it! Exclude me from your giveaway, but thanks so much for participating in our blog tour!

South Dakota is such a fun place to visit and an easy drive from Denver here. We love going up and spending time in Custer State Park. Of course Mt Rushmore is always fun as well as Crazy Horse. (yes we have all the tourist places covered) LOL! Got the scare of my life at Reptile Gardens! I hate snakes! Your plate is fantastic. What an incredible job you did on those faces!

When I think of South Dakota, I think of 2 lovely people, Adam and Natalie, who are from South Dakota. Adam was a co-worker of my husband's. They are the most wonderful people.

Like my home state of WA, SD looks to have many interesting aspects. I've seen pictures of Mt. Rushmore (not my own), and the buffalo don't surprise me, but the pictures of the waterfalls are very refreshing. The rocks are very different than those of my home state.

Is there a pattern for your block, or am I a blind bat?

Hi. I would like to include your license plate block on my Pinterest AMB Blog Tour board. I did Vermont and am trying to get them all together.
Would you allow me to include yours? It's a wonderful block.

My niece and her family visited a few summers ago and had nothing but good things to say, which makes me want to visit! Is the pattern for your block available for those who might want to make a quilt?
Thanks, Rosemary
