My Quilters Planner arrived last month, but I hadn't taken the time to start planning for next year until this week. I decided which projects from my UFO list from last year are still UFO's and put them on the list. In all reality, nothing else is getting finished this year, unless it's a new quick project.
My UFO's
1. Black/White/Green/Pink quilt. I've been working on this since 2012 and it's still not done. It just needs to be assembled, but I lost interest. It's for us, so no real deadline.
2. Scrappy Trip Around the World - The top is pieced and assembled, but I want it bigger, so I need 26 more blocks and just haven't put a focus on making them. All the strips are cut and ready to sew.
3. Blue/Yellow Scrappy Trip Around the World - started collecting fabrics 2 years ago, but cut out in 2016 and I've started making blocks. I have about 3 done and all the pieces sorted and ready to sew. Again I just need time to sew. I love making these blocks.
4. Blue Ridge Beauty - Yellow and Blue - Made from the scraps of the TATW #3 above. I've made the HST's and just need to finish the scrappy blocks, to use the leftovers for 4 patches. This might become a wedding present for my cousin, so I need to get busy.
5. Paul's t-shirt quilt - A t-shirt quilt from his racing shirts. They are all cut out and interfaced, just need to square them up and set them. All the fabric is bought and in the tub with them. Wish he would push me to get it done, maybe I'll try for his birthday in March.
6. Mom's Friendship Braid. I worked on it, and it's ready for the borders to be put on, my least favorite part, so I may take this to SOYO so I push myself to get it done.
7. Holiday Metals HST's - All the fabric cut, just need to make the HST's.
8. Sunny Skies - Leader/Ender Project. Getting close to having all the 16 patches complete. Need to pick a background.
9. Farm Girl Vintage - All the blocks done. Need to cut out sashing and be ready to piece at SOYO in January.
10. En Provence - Top is together, needs 2 sets of borders.
11. Nova - Need to finish squaring up blocks
12. On Ringo Lake - In progress. Clue 1 done, Clue 2, Clue 3, and Clue 4 cut out, some of each sewn.
13. Sunny Skies Hexie Diamond - My current hexie project
14. Purple/Pink Batik bag - Cut out
15. Carry All Organizer - Cut Out
16. Crazy Mom Focus Hexies - All pieced, waiting for assembly.
So there's my list. I know I have fabric for other things, but these are the cut-out and started projects. It's so much less overwhelming than thinking of all the projects I could do. Some of these I've simply been waiting for retreat because I do better at assembly and borders at the retreat than I do at home. Time to keep moving forward and finishing up some projects.

Quilting Old UFO's
With only a few big UFO's left on my list, I really wanted to get the ones I could finished up. They aren't for anyone in particular, thus the reason they were left to the end. This is Merry Go Round. It was a sample for a class I taught a couple years ago. It's not a hard quilt, but did get boring after a while. I struggle with using scraps, so I think that's why I do not care for it. I'm hopeful it will find a good home at some point.

I just did a meander on it with a cream/tan variegated King Tut. The backing is Central Park with a bit of teal from mom's stash.

I also quilted up the Scrappy Swoon I made at quilt retreat last year. I think it needs something, but I am not sure what. It just is too medium toned for me.

This week the weather finally turned warm, so we've been playing outside with the kids after work every night. Mathew is walking a ton and is such a happy guy.

Mikaela has mastered the tricycle and got a new bike for Easter, but it still learning how to ride it.

UFO's 6, 7, & 8
I've been working hard getting ready for quilt retreat this weekend and spent quite a bit of time packing last night. I only have 4 bags which just doesn't seem like that much since it includes my machine. Oh well, I'm coming home at night, so I can always grab stuff I forget. The only pressing thing I have left to do is cut the sashing strips for Swoon and I plan to do that at lunch. With all my current projects packed to sew on at retreat and kids who went to bed early last night, I wanted to sew! So I pulled out the taggie blanket I planned to make for Mathew. I got one made and after spending $8 on ribbon I was pretty disappointed. It's green minkee and to get some color I bought 5 spools of ribbon, but it just looks too blaaaaahhhhh to me.

I had another piece of green minkee and I pulled out this squares piece of minkee to see what I could come up with. They were the same size! Since they were end of bolt pieces that was pretty amazing. I put them together and cut down the center and made two car seat blankets. Both are about 24"x30". They will work great for leaving in the car so Mathew has something to snuggle with. The original plan was to a 30"x50" back out of the squares and piece a top, but for the use they will get, two smaller ones is probably better. He loves minkee and it helps him to snuggle with it to go to sleep.

So I checked 3 more UFO's off my list. These projects are so quick and easy and can be done in a couple hours, yet I let them sit and wait. I'm so happy to have them done and I can now put the other stuff away and have one less UFO project bag.

December Sewing in Review
I started out December strong, well the first hour of it! I finished this purse in the wee hours of December 1. It's the Barbados bag and I'll be teaching it in February. I have one started for me, but just didn't find the time to get it made.
Then the month went rather south and I didn't get a whole lot accomplished. We were gone, working our 3rd job, and sick for most of the month. I did finish this Day Break Sample for a class I plan to teach in January. It's a fun little block to make and the class will be a starting point for the whole quilt if anyone is interested. I'm teaching a series of classes this year using the Hex And More Ruler and the Sidekick Ruler. This uses both.
I've always wanted to do a Swoon class, so I finally decided to do it as a one block class. That way people can make a wall hanging or table topper, before committing to the whole quilt. Since the class is during Stock Show I made a western fabric sample, but I also have modern fabric blocks done as well. I still love this block and now that I've made several I've gotten it figured out how to press to make them easier.
I also made this hexie ornament for an exchange with friends. It didn't turn out how I expected, but it was okay.
I worked a lot on my Buggy Barn hexies during work breaks and have almost all the sashing done. Now I need to figure out how I will finish it.
For our niece and nephews this year I made embroidered towels with the kids names. I think they turned out pretty cool. Mikaela helped pick the colors and she has decided she wants one too, so I'll have to get on that. They are quick and easy to do once I make up my mind to set up the embroidery machine.
I was playing with the V5 software when I was making the towels and designed this sweatshirt for Grandma Leslie.
Then I screwed up and forgot to change the design, so I made a second one for Grandma Ann.
Then I made the one I had originally intended for Grandma Ann. It has all 5 grandkids on it. Ed and Steph are expecting in March and I'll try to add the new baby's name, if it will fit. Someone said they just need to plan to only use either the G or D. Grandma Ann loves to accessorize, so hers have some jewelry she plans to wear with them. The 3 sweatshirts are all from my mom's "stash" of embroidery items, so I just went with the sizes that fit.
One of the quilt shops in town is closing and last week I went for their 50% off stuff. I picked up a new stashbuster ruler, a wall hanging hanger, and some yellow batik that will match some horse batik I already have.
For Christmas I received awesome gifts from my little bro and his fiance. Two rulers, a seam ripper and nippers. It was so exciting to get quilty gifts.
I needed a quick gift, so I made up a fleece blanket with embroidery on it. I plan to give it later this week and then will share the embroidery. I didn't have time to commit to a quilt, so a blanket will do for now.
This year I won the staff UFO finish competition. Per capita we beat the customers and Tammy gave me this great box. It already has my mini professional tote in it. It's a WIP that will turn into a UFO tomorrow unless I get some major sewing time tonight. I have the front and back made. The pattern is quite a bit different than the full size professional tote, so I am learning a lot and ripping a lot when I don't read the directions quite right. It's definitely a pattern where people will want to take a class to make it.
With only 40 hours in so far this month, I just haven't gotten a lot accomplished. Looking back I didn't do too bad though. I have a quilt retreat coming up in January and then sewing with friends in February, so I hope to get more accomplished. I have 40+ UFO's on my list for this year, so I hope to get it down to under 10.

2013 Quilts in Review
2013 was the year of the UFO at the Sewing Center and with the incentive to complete as many projects as I could, I took off. I accomplished a lot and finished some UFO's I never thought would see the light of day. The ones that are left - they are all the big ones I can't finish with my frame in the small size. So I didn't work on them. I have about 10 or so of my own left and 10 or so of mom's left. All of them are fairly big, so I hope to complete at least 1 from either list each month next year. I also have some challenging quilts I want to start next year, just to take my quilting to a new level.
I finished this Briar Rose quilt made of scrap batiks. I plan to make another one from my regular fabric scraps, so I have been cutting up scraps and sewing sets of squares as a leaders and enders project this year.
I used up some of my Let it Snow batik to make a throw for the couch. I love the fabric and still have plenty to make something this year. I also made a table topper and pillow to match.
I used up some scraps to make this Teacups baby quilt for a class I taught. It's a baby size quilt.
I made this Peaks quilt out of 12 fat quarters for a sample for the store.
This quilt is a a Chevron quilt I made as a sample for a class I taught.
This one was a new quilt I made. It's an English Paper Pieced star I pieced in 1 month . It's a wall hanging.
I finished this Unity wall hanging. I thought the pattern was for a bigger quilt, but with only 1 1/2" strips, it finished very small.
Scrappy Hugs and Kisses was a fun quilt to make with leftover batik strips. I have enough leftovers to make a scrappy batik Trip Around the World next year.
I pieced some leftover batiks into this diamond. It's very small with 1/2" hexie's, but was a new project for me this year.
The Thangles BOM started as a fun project in 2009, but with lots of problems I just didn't enjoy the colors or the finished project, so I put it off for a long time. This year at retreat I finished the top, so I was able to get it finished this year.
Frolic Star Surround was made from a Quilt a Long. I love the blocks and did it after it was over, but still enjoyed making it. I used scraps from Frolic.
My oldest UFO was completed, thanks to a Year of Lovely Finishes. I made this appliqued wold for Paul. I started it in 2008.
This quilt was Mikaela's quilt for Christmas. I wanted to make a large Carpenter Star, so I used a piece of minkee and matched the colors to it. I used all Stash fabric to make it.
These are just a few quilts I made this year. I completed 55 UFO's, 60 NEW projects, 14 Samples, and 14 of Mom's UFO's. All in all I feel very good about how much I got done. I have projects lined up and waiting for next year. I have 1 sample I need to make before the end of the year and then it will be one to new projects.

100th Finish of the Year
This weekend was Hunter's Widow Weekend - for me at least. I had to work for the Sewing Center on Friday night and Saturday, with a meeting on Sunday. The kids went with Paul so my dad and his wife could watch them with the other grand kids while Paul and my brother and SIL went hunting. I felt like a free woman! Friday night I worked, spent time with my MIL catching up, and then started sewing about 10:30. I put together this Christmas Coins quilt of my moms. It was one of the UFO's on my list to finish.

Here's a close up of the fabrics. It was from the beginning of her quilting time because there are some good fabrics and some not so good ones mixed together. My grandma made one as well. It became the top and this one is the back. I lined it up perfectly, however the backing was a good 6" bigger. So the top matches on both sides, but the bottom just ends with the coins. Would you fix it? It wouldn't take much to take off the bottom border on the backing and put it higher up and re-quilt that last row. Would you do that or just leave it? I feel like it's unfinished because the back doesn't have the bottom border.

Saturday night I got home around 8 and was exhausted, but I knew I needed to get this quilt top quilted before Mikaela got home. I started quilting and had it done by 10pm! I was so relaxed and picked up a couple totes to clean out and two hours later I had completely cleaned up my stash between the two bedrooms and re-organized it. I have a huge tote of Batiks full now. I have only one drawer with UFO's and fabric kits that need to be done. I emptied out 8 plastic project bags and 5 project boxes.

I even emptied this tote to make it a scrap container. Everything smaller than a fat quarter or half yard went in to this container. It will be cut up into usable pieces during the quarter break next month. This is a great project for lunch when I do not have schoolwork. I cut up some blue scraps and matched up a jellyroll to make it into a quilt for my MIL for Christmas. Around 1 AM I called it a night.

I didn't set an alarm AND slept in! It's probably the first time in over a year I have slept until 10 AM. I got up and ready for the day, then started quilting the Christmas quilt. I was able to finish quilting it and had time to load a little wall hanging/UFO I found when cleaning the night before. I ran out of time to quilt it before heading to my teacher meeting.

Last night after supper I quilted up the wall hanging. Mikaela "helped" me quilt it, by holding the handle. A few of the swirls are not quite circles, because it really doesn't matter. I actually took some pictures of her helping me and she smiled for the camera. She did however get in trouble for cutting into the wall hanging with scissors and we had a little lesson on cutting with scissors.

Last night I realized after I was in bed that this was #100 for my finishes for the year, so I got out of bed and put the binding and hanging sleeve on it. It's now ready to hang in the kids bedroom. I've finished more UFO's than new this year, but they are pretty close. Anyone want to take a gander at how many UFO's I've finished? I will say I'm excited for the new year to work on some "new" and "big" quilts.

It's amazing how much I can accomplish when the rest of the family is gone and I have some time to myself. Looking forward to retreat in January.

October Lovely Year of Finishes Goal Met and 26 Finishes!
A Lovely Year of Finishes Goal Met! + A Massive Amount of UFO's finished!

This month my goal in the Lovely Year of Finishes was this UFO top of my moms. It was just blocks, made in the wrong size and didn't work the way the pattern said. My goal was to make the top. I quickly made the top in a night or two, then another night to make the back and I was on a role. I put it with batting and one of the middle weekends this month I quilted it along with 5 other quilt tops. I finished the binding and now have a finished quilt for when someone needs it. It does not have a home yet, but instead of just getting the top done as was my original goal, I finished the entire quilt.

Other goals included:
Giveaway bag-3 done
Highchair sample-done
The Maze Sample-done
Rubic Star Center -done
Swoon Block- done
Star Surround Top - Quilt done
The Maze Sample top was made and turned in.

The high chair sample was made and it works great.

I made 3 bags, 1 for a giveaway and 2 for me. I love the smaller size and have started using them for my binding bag and hexie bag.

I pulled out this pink/brown table topper and made it in one night, checked off my UFO list for the month.

I also pulled out the scraps left from the Zoo Parade an made this baby quilt. It is also finished!

I picked up the Confetti baby quilt top and got it quilted and the binding applied. I lost the fabric I thought I had to make the binding, but had enough of the backing to make binding.

I also picked up the Twirl quilt and got it quilted and the binding on. It feels great to have it done as it has been a UFO for way too long!

I took the opportunity to finish my last Swoon block at Club Sew

I pulled out and pieced this 9 patch/snowball quilt top from 2009. It was quilted and the binding is on.

I finished the Star Surround top and was able to get it quilted and the binding on.

I took this road grader panel and turned it into a little boys play mat.

I made this quilt in 1 evening for my nephew's 1st birthday.

I pulled out mom's 60* table topper and turned it into 2 reversible table toppers. A pastel one:

A 60* table runner, using up the last of the grader fabric.

I made a reversible placement, another one of mom's ufo's.

A treat bag kit made

The other reversible table topper

An EZ wallet kit

I made 3 UFO flannel baby blankets.

I took the tumblers and pieced them into a top and then quilted and bound it this week. This was my major finish for the week.

I also finished the adorning schlep UFO bag. It took me a couple hours, but has been cut out for a couple years.

I also pieced this mini merry go round quilt top. I have the batting and backing ready to quilt it, but too much going on this week to get it done. I would like to work on quilting feathers, so may use this for practice.

I also made the Rubic Star into a top. I am working on the next border, but have not spent much time on it. I've been too busy doing hand sewn binding. I also quilted some on the Wolf quilt, but need to do more on the Bernina, so I am waiting until I have time to play.

The blocks I made for a friendship quilt for one of our teachers.

This massive blizzard the first weekend made me stop and realize how no power really affects a family. I feel so blessed to have survived and be able to move forward. I feel very fortunate we did not lose anything, including all the milk I have frozen for the last year. It was stored at my dad's and they lost everything in their freezer. I had picked up the milk 2 weeks before the storm. If you've nursed/pumped you know how vital the milk is. As I am transitioning Mathew and quitting nursing, I am so thankful the 30+ bags of milk were saved. The Ranchers Relief Fund is still accepting donations for all those who lost their livelihoods. My dad and his wife lost 36 horses and have 11 left. They think there may be one more missing, but can't find it. This storm was outrageous. I spent the 3 days with my kids and husband, playing and sleeping and relaxing. I could have hand sewn, but I didn't. We used the camping supplies to cook and warm the house when needed. Luckily it was in October, so it wasn't as cold as it would have been in January.

This was an amazing month for me! I had 18 UFO finishes, 26 total finishes, 4 new projects, a few blocks for a friendship quilt, and lots of relief in seeing the UFO's checked off the list.
Next month I plan to work on Christmas presents and a UFO or two. I don't think I'll have as much time for sewing since Paul will be deer hunting, but I'll try my best.

Monday Night Finish
After such an amazing weekend, I probably should have done something besides quilt last night, but Paul heated up leftovers and I didn't have to cook. It was icy outside, so no going out and he watched the FB game. The kids played with me while I quilted. Mikaela has become such a little helper, pinning on the backing and taking out the pins when I am done.
I quilted up the Essence Tumbler quilt. I just do not care for this one, so I knew if I didn't get it done right away it would go back in the pile.

I even went so far as to put the binding on completely by machine last night after the kids went to bed. I just didn't want to deal with it any longer! It's looking for a good home now and I am so glad to be done with it! Chalk that up to finish #24 for the month!

I went into the crawl space where I had some fabric stashed from when I moved out of my sewing room last year. I also have some of mom's older UFO's in there. I decided it was time to pull one out and I chose the Christmas Coin quilt. This is the top that is done and it looks like she was making another one as the back. I'm not quite sure, but it is all pieced and the borders/sashing pinned on. I think I'm going to make it into one quilt and call it done. It might have been one where mom and grandma were each making one, but none the less I'm going to finish it and call it done.

Here's a close up of the fabrics. I know it is an older UFO since mom made it before working at the quilt shop, but the fabrics aren't awful either.

Not sure what I'll do tonight. It's yucky out again and we have leftovers, so no cooking for me. I'm thinking a small, quick finish to make it to 25 might be in order.
